Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition in Malaysia which affect 60% of the population aged 65 and above. While age is a major risk factor for osteoarthritis of the knee, young people can get it too. For some individuals, it may be hereditary. For others, knee osteoarthritis can result from injury of the knee joint without proper recovery or being overweight.

What Is Knee Osteroarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the natural cushioning between joints – cartilage wears away over times. This happens when the bones of the joints rub more closely against one another with less of the shock absorbing benefits of cartilage. The rubbing results in pain, stiffness, decreased ability to move and sometimes, the formation of bone spurs.

In the case of knee osteoarthritis, the joint cartilage on the surfaces of the shin bone, thighbone and the kneecap rub together, which can lead to pain, swelling, and inflammation and make movement difficult.

There are a few stages of knee osteoarthritis which defined the severity of the condition. Normally, knee OA is diagnosis via a series of physical examination as well as X-ray examination.

Stages In Knee Osteoarthritis

Stage 1 – A person with stage 1 OA will show very minor bone spur growth. The person will usually not experience pain or discomfort as the tear and wear is very minor.

Stage 2 – Also known as the “mild” stage. X-rays of the knee joints will reveal greater bone spur growth, but the cartilage is usually at a health size, the knee space joint is normal and the bones are not rubbing one another. In this stage, sufferers may begin to experience knee pain after a long day of walking or running. Joint stiffness in the joint when sitting for too long without moving or tenderness when kneeling or bending.

Stage 3 – Classified as “moderate” stage. In this stage, the cartilage between bones shows obvious damage, the space between the knee joints begin to narrow. People with this stage are likely to experience frequent pain at the knee join when walking, running, bending, or kneeling. They may also experience joint stiffness after sitting for long period of time or when waking up in the morning. Joint swelling may be present after extended periods of motion.

Stage 4 – The “severe” stage. People with this stage experience great pain and discomfort when they walk or move the joint. The joint space between bones is dramatically reduced with the cartilage is almost completely gone, leaving the joint stiff and possibly immobile. At this stage, people have their daily activities affected.

Muscles and Ligament act important roles in protecting the knee joint from injury. Weak and tight muscles will result in imbalances in the knee joints eventually results in arthritis in knee joint. The tight muscles from the thigh and leg will compress the kneecap against the thigh at the same time stress the meniscus (the cartilage between the shin bone and the thigh bone) leading to degeneration.

In One Spine Chiropractic and Physiotherapy Centre, we not only reduce the pain but with the treatment backed by our team of physiotherapists, we are able to identify the weak and tight muscles and strengthen them accordingly.
