    Neck Pain Is Common

Neck pain is a major health concern over the world and in fact it is one of the top 5 disorders in the world. It is fast becoming the leading cause of disability in almost all nations of the world, even children are now experiencing neck pain due to excessive mobile device usage. The need of non-surgical treatments and changes of lifestyles are needed to stop the rapid rise in numbers of neck patients.

Many neck patients are still living with their pain after taking medication, applying patches or balms. Reducing your pain won’t make your condition go away! Neck pain arises when the neck joints become weak and unstable. When the surrounding muscles around the neck and shoulders become weaker or unstable, they can lead to stresses on neck joints, spinal discs and spinal nerves. All these will eventually cause a series of complication if you choose to ignore the root causes.

Today in Malaysia, neck pain is becoming the most common complaint. Aching, stiffness or painful neck is a treatable condition without the need of surgery or injection. There are many causes of neck pain, it can be as simple as ergonomic issue to more serious conditions such as spondylosis or slipped disc. In modern days like this, our lifestyles have turned the neck problems into chronic health issues that we can no longer ignore. Excessive usage of mobile devices is the leading cause of chronic neck pain today!

    Neck Structure

The neck and back are made up of small bones called vertebrae. There are stacked on top of each other to form the spinal column. The spinal column supports the head and protects the spinal cord, the main structure which links the network of nerves throughout the body. The top seven vertebrae (c1-c7) in the spinal column form the neck and these are called Cervical Vertebrae. The bones are linked together by facet joints and the small joints attached together with neck muscles allow the head to move in any direction

It All Starts With Poor Posture

Poor posture leads to the weakness of the neck muscles and ligaments which will eventually cause degeneration changes in soft tissues that alter the normal curvature of the cervical spine. Normally, a healthy neck should have a 25-30 degree of lordotic curve. The curvature can reduce and even reverse with poor posture. During the excessive usage of mobile devices, the head is flexed forward and this will directly affect the spine. Tilting the head forward to 15 degrees places about 27 pounds of forces on the neck. During the usage of smartphone, people tend to tilt their head forward for more than 15 degrees which exert more forces on the neck causing pain, stiffness and soreness.

People who use their smartphone excessively will have symptoms such as:

    • Stiff neck – soreness and difficulty in moving the neck
    • Pain – can be localized to one sport or diffused over an area.
    • Radiating pain – to the shoulders and arms
    • Muscular Weakness – Weak shoulder muscles namely trapezius, rhomboids and shoulder external rotators
    • Headache – sub-occipital muscle tightness leading to tension type headaches.

All the symptoms mentioned above are signs of degeneration and if ignore will lead to serious complication such as:

    • Flattening of thoracic kyphosis
    • Early onset of arthritis
    • Spinal Degeneration
    • Disc Compression
    • Muscle Weakness
    • Loss of lung capacity

When the minor issues are neglected or improperly treated, it can lead to damage. A damage neck structure can lead to a slipped disc and spondylosis. The common findings of a patient with slipped disc in the neck are bone spurs or facet hypertrophy. With bone spurs growing, patients may present with a varying degree of ligamentum hypertrophy or thickening. Spinal Stenosis happens when ligamentum flavum become hypertrophy. All these conditions can lead to life-threatening stages in which some are irreversible. If you have neck issues, don’t ignore them. If you have ignored them, you might not be experiencing slipped disc, stenosis or bone spurs, but do try our non-surgical solution first before opting for any form of surgery.

As mentioned, neck pain originates from the weakness of neck muscles and ligaments. Muscles and ligaments around the neck provide stability to our neck. The majority of people with neck discomfort are the results of poor posture or weakness in muscles and ligaments. All these are treatable conditions, our group of chiropractors and physiotherapists have the knowledge and skills to treat even the most severe neck condition successfully.
